Pushing Through the Content Doldrums

I have to admit; it’s been hard to stay the course lately. Ever since I returned from the opener of the Big 6 Series in Adelanto (which was awesome, by the way), I just cannot seem to stay motivated. Granted, I do work a 40-hour per week day job (like most of us) on top of running this website, but I try not to use that as an excuse when it comes to putting in hours on Dirt Buzz. I love doing this, and therefore it typically doesn’t bother me to put in 15–20 hours per week. But for some reason, I am in a big slump right now.

Maybe it’s like the fifth year of marriage: if you can get over that hump then you’re usually good as gold as a couple from then on out—or so I’ve heard. I’m in my third year with Dirt Buzz, and I am happy with the slow, but sustainable growth the site has maintained—especially in a time when the media landscape is changing so drastically. Maybe it’s just the winter blues that has me unmotivated.

Regardless, lately, when I go home from work at night I just want to chill, which of course eats at me. I put a lot of pressure on myself to maintain a high standard of content on Dirt Buzz, despite this website being a one-man show. Chalk that up to being a former dirt bike racer. Hard work (whether it’s mental or physical) just becomes the norm when you race dirt bikes. Like when you want to skip that run or not do your motos for the day: the guilt just eats you alive until you just do it. That’s how I’ve been lately: not wanting to do shit when I go home each night—but still doing shit anyway. I haven't written a blog post in months, yet ironically (while in a slump) I decide to write a blog post about being in a slump.

"Hard work (whether it’s mental or physical) just becomes the norm when you race dirt bikes."

More than likely this lull of mine will pass with time, the same way writer’s block eventually goes away, and the same way a slump goes away for a racer—eventually the flow returns. And the reality is I have nothing to complain about and a lot to be thankful for. Sometimes being in the motorcycle community and industry can be a love-hate relationship, but in the end, my love for this sport of ours always wins out. In some ways, it’s all I know. I’ve been around motorcycles now for 40 years, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

I have met so many cool people through this little website of mine and had the opportunity to share many great stories. So I would love your help. Have a story idea? Want to share your riding experience? Feel like taking a stab at writing a feature? Dirt Buzz has always been an open forum and a place to promote offroad racing, offroad riding, and the offroad lifestyle. Drop me a line with your suggestions for new Dirt Buzz content, a fun story idea, or just to say hello. Maybe it will yank me out of this slump of mine.
